The English Marriage Act stated that if either party was under 21 years of age, then they could not marry without parental consent. However, this didn't apply in Scotland - where individuals could marry at 16 without parental involvement. Resultantly, many young couples traveled to Scotland to wed - a tradition that has lasted many years.
